Purpose & eligibility

IELTS Academic is intended for higher-education study and certain professional registration routes. General Training serves other purposes, including some migration and training routes. Choose the version named by your university, professional body or immigration authority; check whether IELTS for UKVI is required.

Check both the overall band and any minimum per-skill score before booking. A strong overall score may still fall short if one skill is below the institution’s requirement.

Results & next steps

British Council Pakistan lists computer-test results in 1–2 days. Access the electronic Test Report Form and score-sharing options through the Test Taker Portal. You receive skill bands and an overall band from 0–9.

IELTS recommends treating scores as valid for two years; the receiving organisation decides what it accepts. If a band seems incorrect, British Council allows an Enquiry on Results request within six weeks of the test.

How to prepare

Suggested study approach from Amicus. Adapt the pace to your starting level and application deadline.

  1. Take a diagnostic across all four skills and compare each score with your required minimum.
  2. Study the official task types and assessment guidance. Practise Writing and Speaking with feedback rather than memorised scripts.
  3. Build a weekly routine of timed Reading/Listening and reviewed Writing/Speaking practice.
  4. Use official sample questions and computer familiarisation, then rehearse under realistic conditions.

Common questions

Do I need Academic, General Training or UKVI?

Use the exact version requested by your receiving organisation. Do not select a cheaper or more convenient version without confirming acceptance.

Can I retake only one skill?

British Council offers One Skill Retake for eligible computer tests, including UKVI computer tests. It must be taken within 60 days of the original test; only one skill retake is allowed per full test. Check that your receiving organisation accepts it.

Is there a universal IELTS pass mark?

Each university, professional body or immigration route sets its own score requirement. Check overall and individual skill bands.

How do I ask for a remark?

Use the provider’s Enquiry on Results process within six weeks. Check the published service fee and the effect on your application deadline before requesting it.
